Taxes & Spending
Like many of you, I am a family man and business owner. Like you, I have to operate under a budget to ensure the needs of my family and my business are met. On the Mesa City Council, I will see that we act responsibly to meet our community’s needs while balancing the city budget. Wasteful spending has no place in local government, and Mesa residents can rest assured we’ll treat each tax dollar as if it were coming out of our own pocket… just as elected officials should.
You see, fiscal responsibility is a core value for me. As a fast growing community, we are continually challenged with paying for City services to meet the needs of our amazing growth. At the same time, it’s critical we always strive to be efficient with each tax dollar spent.
New property taxes aren’t the answer. Better budgeting is. The city’s budget problem didn’t happen overnight and to think that they can be resolved overnight by continuing to push a Pro Property Tax policy is absurd. A property tax will only continue to fuel the City’s spending habits and weaken the economy.
Mesa’s tax-and-spend City Council status quo has to change its spending ways. New taxes and new debts from bonds are not the fiscally responsible answer. Is it any wonder the City now says it can’t meet its debt obligations?
Fiscal planning and smarter spending is the answer. We can do a better job with each tax dollar. And we can attract new businesses and new jobs to help increase our tax base while providing new opportunities for Mesa residents. The goal isn’t for citizens to spend their lives working for the government – the goal must always be for government to work for its citizens. And by running our city more like a business – and less like a runaway bureaucracy – we can change the way business gets done in Mesa. We can change it for the better!
